How to Stay Safe When You're Dating Online
Meeting people the old-fashioned way has become increasingly difficult over the last few years and pretty much impossible over the last 12 months due to the pandemic.
As a result, more and more people are turning to dating online and there are currently around 15 million UK singles registered on dating sites. With so many different online dating platforms out there, millions of people to search through and so many horror stories, it’s really important that you know how to keep yourself safe online. Here’s a list of safety tips to help you:
1. Choose the Right Online Dating Website
Different dating sites attract different types of people due to their reputation. Some sites are renowned for being hook-up & affair sites, so if you’re looking for a serious relationship, you need to avoid those! Do your research before you sign up and find out what the dating website is all about. Is it a hook-up site? Are there lots of horror stories due to the nature of the site? And more importantly, what does the dating site do to keep you safe?!
So many of the large, well-known dating sites literally let anyone sign up. There are no background checks and zero accountability. The Match Group (which owns Match, Tinder, OkCupid, Hinge, Plenty of Fish and others) have admitted that they don’t screen for sex offenders! And in fact, Plenty of Fish was named the most dangerous dating site in 2017. This is so wrong and it is exactly how our founder met a serial domestic abuser online.
