Online Dating Related Crimes Have Risen By 382%: Why Dating Platforms Need To Put Safety First

For those of you dating in 2020, you are probably no stranger to the world of online dating. In fact, reports have shown that seven million people in the UK are registered on dating sites, and around 1 in 3 relationships now start online. Although the world wide web and all the apps that come with it offer a great way to connect with people fast, there has been a huge increase in reported crimes related to online dating.

Sky News recently obtained some worrying figures. 2,054 offences were recorded between 2011 and 2016. In 2011, 140 crimes were recorded and by 2016 this had risen to 676. This means that online dating related crimes have risen by a whopping 382% over the past five years.

In addition to this, the number of sexual crimes reported rose from 14 to 106 during the same period – a 660% increase! These are just the reported crimes too. It’s safe to assume that the true numbers are actually a lot higher than this.

Online Dating Dangers

Online dating dangers include fake profiles, stalking and harassment, blackmail, rape and in some extreme cases attempted murder. It has even been reported that people use dating apps to trick people into attending drug-fuelled sex parties.

Sky News also found that crimes that have been rising year on year involve two of the biggest dating apps in the UK, Tinder And Grindr.

Although some of these dating sites and apps offer safety tips, it’s clearly not enough to keep their users safe and they should be doing a lot more. So many online dating sites literally give criminals their very own playground and thousands of unwitting victims to choose from.

A Safer Way of Online Dating

Here at Safer Date, we fully understand the dangers of online dating. Our founder went through a horrendous experience and is fully committed to transforming the online dating world. You can hear all about her story in the news.

We put your safety before anything else by carrying out compulsory identity checks on every single member before they are allowed to join or even browse other profiles. This means that we have no fake profiles, scam accounts or catfish on our app. We also offer the most thorough global criminal background checks possible for added security.

We firmly believe this should be standard practice everywhere – but the majority of dating apps are only interested in making money and do nothing to protect their customers.
